Exam Sessions
Entry into the amateur radio world normally starts with getting an FCC amateur radio license which requires passing an exam.

There are two groups of Volunteer Examiners in the Black Hills Area.

Black Hills Volunteer Examiners
This group of VEs operates though the Black Hills Amateur Radio club. Pre-registration for testing is recommended but not required. Exams are normally hosted in at the HomeSlice Media Group offices at 333 West Blvd in Rapid City

Hot Springs Amateur Radio Club
This group of VEs conducts exams at the Hot Springs Library (2005 Library Dr, Hot Springs, SD 57747). More information can be found at their website: K0HS.com

  • March 2nd, 2024 @ 10:00am (walk-ins allowed)
  • May 11th, 2024 @ 10:00am (walk-ins allowed)
  • October 5th, 2024 @ 10:00am (walk-ins allowed)

Please bring your original license (if any) along with a copy of it, a photo ID, and you will need a FRN. Exam Candidates are REQUIRED to register in the FCC Cores system and receive a FRN (Federal Registration Number) before exam day. Currently the exam fee is $15, please bring check or cash. Exact change is appreciated.
